In "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (or "Sorcerer's Stone" in the US), we are introduced to the main protagonist, Harry Potter. Harry is an orphan who lives with his cruel aunt, uncle, and cousin, the Dursleys. On his eleventh birthday, he learns that he is a wizard when he receives a letter inviting him to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Harry arrives at Hogwarts and befriends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. They soon discover that Harry is famous in the wizarding world for surviving an attack by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort as a baby. Throughout the school year, Harry learns about the magical world, attends classes, and participates in the game of Quidditch.
As the story progresses, Harry and his friends become suspicious of the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Quirrell. They suspect he is trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone, an object that can grant immortality. With the help of his friends, Harry manages to get past various obstacles protecting the stone, including a three-headed dog, a life-threatening chess game, and a series of enchantments.
Eventually, Harry confronts Professor Quirrell, who is revealed to be possessed by Lord Voldemort. With the stone's protection and the love and sacrifice of Harry's mother, he is able to thwart Voldemort's plans. Harry's touch causes Quirrell's body to burn, and Voldemort flees.
In the end, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are praised for their bravery. Harry returns to the Dursleys for the summer but looks forward to his future adventures at Hogwarts. The first book sets the stage for Harry's journey as he learns about his magical abilities, his connection to Voldemort, and the challenges he will face in the wizarding world.
